The Nelons, a Southern Gospel music group regularly featured on the Gaither Homecoming videocassette series, will return to the Imperial Valley for a concert at 7 p.m. May 11 in Central Baptist Church, 1290 S. Imperial Ave. in El Centro.
Admission is free but a freewill offering will be taken.
The Valleywide event is being sponsored by participating churches, KGBA 100.1 FM and Central Baptist.
The Nelons' first single, "The Sun's Coming Up," was one of the top 20 song of the year for 1978, ‘79 and ‘80. Over the next two decades the group introduced such standards as "Come Morning," "We Shall Wear a Robe and Crown," "I'll Talk to the Father" and "We've Got to Get America Back to God." The group's signature song, "O For A Thousand Tongues," featuring Kelly Nelon, is the song most closely associated with the Nelons.
"My father (founder Rex Nelon) took great pride in developing new talent," said Kelly Nelon. At age 14 he asked her to join him on the road, said Nelon, and "for over 20 years I had the privilege to learn from him and to see close-hand how he conducted his life." Rex Nelon died in January 2000.
