El Centro resident Robert Romero, arrested earlier this week in connection with a stabbing, has been cleared of all suspicion.

Romero has been released from the county jail and El Centro police are looking for another individual for questioning.

El Centro police Lt. Paul Longoria said this morning Romero is no longer a suspect but he declined to say what led police to identify another suspect as the perpetrator.

The stabbing took place Monday at 458 Hamilton Ave. in a trailer behind a residence there.

The victim, Alex Ortiz of El Centro, was stabbed in the lower abdomen during an argument with another man. Longoria said the argument related to an earlier confrontation between Ortiz and the suspect, but Longoria could not say what was the cause of the confrontation.

Ortiz was taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center after the stabbing. He was listed in stable condition today at the hospital.

Hours after the stabbing, police arrested Romero on suspicion of attempted murder after he was identified by a witness and Ortiz.

While Longoria would not release much detail about the new suspect, he did say that suspect is similar in appearance to Romero, who is 43 years old.

Romero was released without being charged in connection with the crime.
