50 years ago — Nine medals will be awarded to students in El Centro schools in grades 4-12 as winners of the American Legion auxiliary's annual Poppy Poster Contest. Awards will be made at assemblies in the schools.

40 years ago — Rich Bently, a Central Spartan pitcher, used his slow curve to beat the Palo Verde Yellowjackets 8-1 in Imperial Valley League action. The Spartan win clinches at least a tie for first place in the league's standing.

30 years ago — A bigger staff and a stepped-up effort to refine its "outreach program" is sought by the staff of Brawley's Migrant Health Clinic during its second year of operation.

20 years ago — Money, Sheriff Oren Fox said Tuesday, he needs more of it, almost $200,000 to get through this fiscal year. Fox told the Board of Supervisors he needs more money to feed more mouths in jail due to a whopping increase in both county and federal prisoners. He asked for a $64,000 increase in his food budget, an increase made necessary in part by the county's new get tough with criminals policy, he said.
