The Imperial County Teachers Uniserv will join our school districts, parents, students and members of the Valley communities in celebrating Day of the Teacher on Wednesday. This marks the 19th anniversary of the day established to give special recognition to teachers for their contributions to education and the lives of California's children.
At a time when California faces a dramatic teacher shortage, we think it is important to salute the professionals who have devoted their careers and their lives to teaching our students in the classroom. Teachers may be the most undervalued professionals in the workforce today. Yet, there is story after story about people who have been asked to name the most influential people in their lives and who name their former teachers.
CTA and the Association of Mexican American Educators sponsored the bill first proclaiming Day of the Teacher. It was written by Sen. Joseph Montoya (D-El Monte) and adopted in 1982 as Senate Bill 1546. The California celebration was patterned after a similar "El Dia del Maestro" celebrations held in Mexico and other Latin American countries.
