HOLTVILLE — After winning the Steve Zarate powerlifting meet in April, Brawley Union and Imperial high schools were victorious in the second annual Marv Wood powerlifting meet here Saturday.

Brawley won the large school division and Imperial won the small school division.

Overall the Wildcats finished with 565 points followed by Yuma High with 257, Imperial with 252, Holtville with 82, Central with 80 and Calexico and Southwest both with 63 points.

Leading Brawley were Matt Sevilla in the 140-49 pound division and Steven Duran (160-69) and Matt Castaneda (260-plus). They earned lifters of the meet honors in the lightweight, middleweight and super heavyweight divisions.

Imperial's D.J. Hastings (220-29) was outstanding lifter in the heavyweight division.

Duran and Hastings both swept their divisions, winning the bench press, squat and deadlift events. Sevilla and Castaneda were both victorious in the squat and deadlift.

Said Holtville High football coach Jim Sturgeon, who helped run the event: "Overall I think this was a great event. We had a great turnout — over 200 kids — and this meet was a big success.

"We really couldn't do this without the help of the other schools, though. We had people from the other schools helping out in some way and they helped make this what it was."

The participants will get together again sometime late this month or in early June for Brawley's powerlifting meet.
