Spartans get past Eagles 11-7

The hosting Central Union High tennis team finished Imperial Valley League play with an 11-7 win over Southwest in El Centro on Monday.

Leading Central (8-4 IVL) was its singles players, who accounted for eight points.

Eddie Figueroa, the Spartans' No. 1 singles player, defeated Southwest's No. 1 Anad Gupta 6-0, No. 2 John Bonano 6-4 and No. 3 Rdrees Suliman 6-0.

Cental's No. 2, Leo Alvarado, defeated Gupta 6-1 and Bonano and Suliman both 6-0.

Tony Avila, the Spartans' No. 3 singles player, downed Gupta and Suliman 6-0 but fell to Bonano 3-6.

On the doubles side, Central's No. 1 duo of Ricky Montero/Sam Kim downed the Eagles No. 1 team of Randy Lyon/Greg Lyon 6-2, No. 2 Southwest team of Joe Kaye/Glen Shummard 6-2 and No. 3 Eagle pair Ramon Osa/Bobby Romero 6-4.

Peter Barthelme/John Harmon, the No. 2 duo for the Spartans, lost 1-6 to Lyon/Lyon, 5-7 to Kaye/Shummard 5-7 and 2-6 to Osa/Romero.


The No. 3 team for Central, Karim Chee/Alex Lopez, lost 1-6 to Lyon/Lyon and 2-6 to Kaye/Shummard and Osa/Romero.

Both teams compete in the IVL finals at 9 a.m. Friday at Central.
