May 08, 2001

State Sen. Jim Battin (R-La Quinta) awarded $4,450 in scholarships and gift certificates at a luncheon Saturday.

The scholarships are part of Battin's seventh annual Outstanding High School Senior of the Year program.

The first-place finisher, who was awarded a $2,000 scholarship, was Marc Manix of Central Union High School in El Centro.

Jessica Rodriguez of Southwest High School in El Centro was awarded second place and a $1,000 scholarship.

Third place and a $500 scholarship went to Christina Ruiz of Holtville High School.

Sonia Caballero of Calexico High School received a special merit award and $500.

Of the 73 eligible high schools to participate in the scholarship program, 36 chose to take part this year, nominating their top male and female students.

Imperial County's nominees included: Adriana Romero and Robert Fernandez of Brawley Union High School; Sonia Caballero and Enrique Cervantes of Calexico High; Carol Kulzer and Clayton Love of Calipatria High School; Tracy De La Vega and Marc Manix of Central; Martha Segura and Miguel Luna of Desert Oasis High School in El Centro; Christina Ruiz and Christopher Stergios of Holtville High; Savannah Armstrong and Jonathan Dale of Imperial High School; Luz Gonzalez and Ezequiel Lares of San Pasqual High School; and Jessica Rodriguez and William Middleton of Southwest.

All student nominees from Imperial County and their parents were invited to the awards luncheon at Brunner's Restaurant in El Centro.

Each nominee received special certificates of recognition, state of California lapel pins, and a $25 gift certificate to Staples.

Nominations, ceremonies and awards are held in each of the three counties Battin represents. The scholarship program is not state-funded, and is the only scholarship program sponsored by a legislator in California.
