Coroner's Office investigating death of 56-year-old man found in cab of big rig

May 09, 2001

CALEXICO — The Imperial County Coroner's Office is investigating the death of a 56-year-old Shafter man found Tuesday in his tractor-trailer rig parked in this city.

Serafin Maya Mora likely had been dead for two days when he was found by friends about 10:30 a.m., according to county Sheriff's Office Sgt. Rick Macken, county chief deputy coroner.

Mora was found sitting in the sleeper compartment of his truck parked in Double AA Parking, a long-term parking area on Second Street and Cesar Chavez Boulevard.

Macken said there were no signs of foul play and the death likely was from natural causes. However, that will not be confirmed until an autopsy is done Saturday.

Until that time the case is being treated as a homicide, as is procedure in such death cases.

Macken said friends found Mora after he failed to show up for a planned meeting with a group of friends.
