50 years ago — El Centro school teachers will receive a 10 percent pay raise next year, it was announced by Guy Weakley, district superintendent of El Centro schools. The pay increase will be about $400 in the high schools and $300 in the elementary schools.

40 years ago — A high school invitational speech festival will start at 1 p.m. May 12 on the Imperial Valley College campus. Speech students from El Centro, Brawley, Calexico, Imperial, Holtville and Calipatria will take part in the contest. The college hopes to make this an annual activity.

30 years ago — Mrs. Connie Caro, an El Centro mother of four adopted children, Friday night was named mother of the year in a KXO radio contest. Mrs. Caro, nominated by the El Centro Pilot Club, received the highest number of votes and an all-expense-paid weekend in San Diego and $100 in gift certificates.

20 years ago — A capacity crowd was in attendance recently at an autograph reception honoring Blanca Guerrero Diaz of Calexico, who formally introduced her paperback and songbook titled "El Error del Mexicano." The event was in the literary studios of the Mexicali State Theatre and attended by both Mexicali and Calexico officials, family and close friends of the writer.
