Voice: Good and dedicated E.C. teachers should be treated fairly

May 09, 2001

I am a parent of children in the El Centro Elementary School District. I have been on school campuses when the district could not provide enough substitute teachers for absent teachers. They have had everything from crossing guards to instructional assistants in place of our children's teachers.

I do not want my children left in a classroom with someone not qualified to maintain that classroom. The school district, school board and our community will have an unmanageable and uncontrollable situation if our teachers walk out on strike because the school board does not want to give them the pay and benefits they have already earned 10-fold. The district has received money from the state of California to assist in raising teacher's salaries. Would any of you work MORE days, agree to MORE responsibilities, and spend LESS time with your families for LESS money?

Our teachers are excellent. The school board speaks praises of their excellence. Yet, they don't give our teachers the respect and pay they earn.

I want teachers to focus 100 percent on educating our children and it is the school board's job to ensure that our children get an excellent education, which our current teachers are more than qualified to give. I know this because I am a substitute teacher. I have been in every grade level and at every El Centro public school. Without the active support from parents and the community, our children's teachers will most likely continue to not be treated fairly by our school board and district.

Parents, please show your appreciation of your children's teachers by speaking in their behalf at the school board meetings and/or writing letters to the board members or newspaper.
