Voice: Imperial Lions club looking for a few good men and women

May 10, 2001

The Imperial Lions Club is in need of new members.

Since 1927, except for the war years of World War II, the Imperial Lions Club has been an integral part of the community of Imperial. We have been sponsors of many youth teams and have paid the utilities of the Boys Scouts for all the years they have existed in the city of Imperial.

We were one of the two sponsors of Little League when it was started in Imperial. We give two $500 scholarships a year to graduating Imperial seniors. We built the existing facility that is used by the Lions Club in 1953. We have leased it from the city since. The facility is used for many functions in the city and has been totally maintained by the Lions Club in the good and bad years.

We need new members badly. We only have 11 members, but only about four who work. Membership is open to both men and women over age 18. We need at least 25 members to do the proper job of being a club, as not everyone works on every project or function.

Inasmuch as we have been in existence for about 70 years, hopefully some of you members in the community will be willing to give up either two or four Wednesdays a month. Currently we meet the first and third Wednesdays at the El Zarape Restaurant in Imperial at 7 a.m. We would like to have a membership rally meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 23 at the Lions Club building on the corner of G and Ninth Street across from the City Park. If we don't get new members, probably the charter will disband.
