Youth sports/recreation roundup: Hannon qualifies for western zones

POWAY — Imperial Valley Desert Aquatics swimmer Julia Hannon qualified for the western zone swimming championship in the girls 9-10 50-meter breaststroke and 100 breaststroke during a meet here last weekend.

Hannon took third in both the 50 breaststroke (43.98 seconds) and the 100 breast (1 minute, 34.51 seconds) at the Pacific Swim A/B Long Course meet. Her times were good enough to earn her a trip to Maui, Hawaii, where the western zone meet will be staged.

She also placed seventh in the 200 freestyle (2:57.11), second in the ‘B' 50 butterfly (42.33) and sixth in the ‘B' 50 backstroke (45.81).

IVDA's Alexandra Mason qualified for the Junior Olympics in the girls 9-10 50 freestyle with an 18th-place finish in the ‘A' race at the meet. Mason took fifth in the ‘B' 50 backstroke.


In the 8-and-under division, Ali Hannon took third in the ‘A' 50 breaststroke and fourth in the 100 breaststroke. Ali finished first in the ‘B' 200 freestyle, second in the ‘B' 100 freestyle and third in the ‘B' 50 butterfly. A.J. Mason took sixth in the boys ‘B' 50 backstroke.

Junior wrestling

FRESNO — Brawley Gladiator Chauncey Rowe took second while wrestling in the novice 105-pound class at the California Kids Freestyle State Tournament here recently.

Rowe went 4-1 with two pins, with his only loss coming in the finals.

Gladiators Corey Caffarrella (schoolboy 100), Joseph Salazar (novice 65) and Anthony Liston (midget 60) both had records of 1-2 at the meet. Cameron Bender (schoolboy 115) of the Gladiators went 0-2.

IV gymnastics

SAN DIEGO — Imperial Valley Gymnastics Club's Savannah Nelson took second at a competition here recently.

Nelson's all-around score was 32.825 in level 4 competition.

Teammate Rachel Burt finished with a score of 28.7, Carissa Acuña tallied a 30.05, Karen Douglas a 25.65 and Kelsey Walk a 26.725.


SEELEY — The winners of Saturday's Race for Life were:

Girls — Lexi Washburn (6), Kiersten Brown (8), Katherine West (10), Erika Short (11) and Samantha Culp (14).

Cruiser — John Mullen (11), Michael Williams (31-35) and Joel Rebik (36-40).

Novice — Austin Cooke (5 and under), Connor Vangelos (6), Billy Erickson (8), Tyler Spence (9) and Christian Ceja (11).

Intermediate — Connor Pankratz (5 and under), Ryan Price (6), Curren Facer (7), Orion Perez (9), Landon Erickson (10), David Ponce (11), Jeromy Allison (12), Joshua Angulo (14) and Seth Kramer (28 and over).

Expert — Jonathan Carrillo (6), Chad Kerley (7), Bryce Hocking (8), Cesar Silva (9), Cameron Lofgren (10), Juan Carrillo (11), Shayne Godfrey (12), Ty Patterson (13), Greg Lyon (15) and J.D. Perryman (16).

Calipatria wrestling

Isaac Gomez led a group of Calipatria freestyle wrestlers who competed in the California freestyle state championships in Fresno on Sunday, taking second place at 230 pounds in the schoolboy division and finishing with a 2-1 record.

Also competing were Joseph Hill (100 pounds), who finished with a 1-2 record and did not place and Efrain Sambrano (100 pounds), going 0-2. Both were also in the schoolboy division.

Gomez qualified for the West regionals in Idaho in June.
