50 years ago — Five new directors were elected by the El Centro Chamber of Commerce on May 11. The judges committee reported that Emile Faure, Fred Hix, Charles Lasher, Glenn Simmons and Carlos Thomason had been elected.

40 years ago — Tom Quinn, 17, a Brawley News sports reporter, was named winner of the $10,000 Grantland Rice Memorial Scholarship as the most promising sportswriter in America. The scholarship is to Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

30 years ago — Three wives of Navy officers who are prisoners of war in North Vietnam will be special guests at the change-of-command ceremony at El Centro Naval Air Facility. The ceremony, will see Capt. G.A. Parker relieve Capt. Simpson Evans Jr. as commander.

20 years ago — Imperial Valley College President Dr. Dan Angel has a new college president's job today. By a 3-2 vote Monday the board of trustees of Citrus Community College in Azusa approved Angel to replace Robert Haugh.
