All IVL teams to represent in San Diego's CIF

May 13, 2001

The Imperial Valley League held its tennis finals in El Centro on Friday with all teams involved sending players to compete in the CIF San Diego Section post season.

Winning it all on the singles side was Central Union High School's Eddie Figueroa, who defeated Calexico High's Chris Cota 6-7 (3-7), 6-4, 6-2 in the final.

Figueroa and Cota qualify for the post-season along with Calexico's Miguel Cota and Brawley Union High's Doug Williams.

In the all-Southwest High School doubles final, the team of John Bonano and Ramon Osa downed Greg Lyon and Randy Lyon 6-2, 6-0 to win it all.

"I think our guys played against some really good competition. John and Ramon hadn't played together all year and they played really well," said Eagle coach Genaro Piniero. "Even though they hadn't played together we were pretty confident about how they would do."

Also qualifying for CIF were Central's Ricky Montero and Leo Alvarado and Morgan Sutton and Grant Elmore from Brawley.

Said Wildcat coach Mike Palacio: "This was a very even tournament. It was just fun to watch everyone fight it out. Hopefully everyone who qualified can do something at CIF as a whole."

All the CIF qualifiers will compete at the San Diego Section tournament May 29-30 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
