Brawley girls lead list of CIF swimmers

The Brawley Union High School boys and girls swim teams lead Imperial Valley League swimmers competing in the CIF San Diego Section preliminaries at Mount Carmel High School in San Diego at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Leading Brawley on the girls side are Jennifer Cardenas, Brooke Pace and Denae Smith, who will be competing in four events each.

Cardenas and Smith will compete in the 100-meter butterfly and 200 individual medley and Pace will swim in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. The three also will compete in two relays.

Cardenas and Pace will team with Stephanie Luckey and Lauren Roberts in the 200 medley relay. Cardenas, Pace and Smith will hook up with Marianne Wenzel in the 400 freestyle relay.


Individually Roberts will take part in the 50 freestyle and Luckey will compete in the 100 backstroke.

Roberts, Smith and Wenzel will team with Tracy King for the 200 freestyle relay.

Leading the Brawley boys are Spencer Kellogg, Mark McConnell and Robbie Overstreet, who will compete in three relays.

The three will team with Jeremy Schmidt in the 200 medley relay and will hook up with Danny Sims in the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay.

The only boys swimmers competing in individual events are Central Union High School's Fabian Amparano in the 100 breaststroke and Southwest High's Robert Boniface in the 100 butterfly.
