May 17, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

A Naval Air Facility El Centro aviation ordnance man suffered moderate injuries after hitting a farm vehicle from behind in his van.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol stated sailor Roger L. Smallwood III, 20, of Cornelia, Ga., was heading east on Ross Road just west of Low Road in El Centro about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Smallwood failed to notice the farm vehicle being driven by Enrique Llausas, 64, of Mexicali in front of him that also was traveling east.

Smallwood's van hit the back of the vehicle. Smallwood had to be extricated from the van.

It was unclear if Llausas' vehicle was stopped or moving when the accident occurred. A Highway Patrol spokesman was not available for comment.
