Wildcats swim into finals

SAN DIEGO — The Brawley Union High School girls 200-yard medley relay team qualified for the San Diego Section finals at Mount Carmel High School here Wednesday.

The team of Stephanie Luckey, Brooke Pace, Jennifer Cardenas and Lauren Roberts swam to a school record of 1 minute 59.82 seconds to take fifth at the section prelims.

The foursome was the only of the Wildcats to qualify for the finals, although Brawley did have plenty of qualifiers for the consolation championships.

Roberts took ninth in the 50 freestyle (26.32), setting a school record and qualifying for the consolation round.

The team of Denae Smith, Cardenas, Marianne Wenzel and Pace took 11th (4:03.25) in the 400 freestyle relay to qualify as for the consolation round as well. Their time set a school record.

Others qualifying for the consolation round were Cardenas in the 100 butterfly (1:03.97) and Pace in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.30).

No Brawley boys made it to the next round. However, the 200 freestyle relay team of Robbie Overstreet, Mark McConnell, Danny Sims and Spencer Kellogg set a school record with a 1:40.57.

The San Diego Section finals will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Mount Carmel High.
