50 years ago — Herb Brown, posting a 192 average, won the Imperial Valley bowling match game championship trophy. This competition, held each year, had Bill Foss as runner-up with a 189 average. Phil Young was third with 180.

40 years ago — A 30-year-old Mexicali seamstress was arrested in Calexico for smuggling heroin concealed on her clothing. She was apprehended when she attempted to cross border. U.S. customs officials noted she was a "key supplier to Valley narcotics."

30 years ago — More than 100 carloads of local produce were either on their way to market or in the process of being routed as the Southern Pacific trains begin to roll again. The 150 local railroad employees went back to work after Congress passed emergency legislation to end a strike that idled trains across the nation.

20 years ago — A group of about 20 construction workers set up an "informational picket line" at the Salton Sea geothermal site at 6 a.m. this morning to protest the fact that Southern California Edison has not hired Valley people to construct the site.
