Thank You: New lights bring old memories

May 19, 2001

Just a few weeks ago new lights were installed at Beechey Little League field. As I watched the old lights being removed I realized that those old fixtures had seen over 40 years of baseball.

I myself could remember Abe Gonzales and Ruben Garcia Sr. preparing the field before each game. I could still picture Ed Beechey behind the plate and Don Knight score keeping above the third-base dugout. As I reminisced about those who have left the playing field, I watched a new team of volunteers take the field, lighting the way for another 20 years of baseball.

I would like to thank the following individuals who donated their time, expertise and equipment to make the lighting project a reality. They are: Werner McChristy, Carlton King, Ken Stills, Chuck Woodland, Andy Sancineto, Carlos Garcia and the Irby Construction Co. crew of Tray Roper, Robert Kohler, Mario Mendoza, L.B. Brown, Sam Mendoza and Bryan Winters. Special thanks to Brawley Little League's Rusty Garcia, Miguel Miranda and Ruben Garcia Jr. for organizing the project, and to the Imperial Irrigation District, the city of Brawley parks and public works crews for their willingness to jump in to assist where needed.

As the new lights were turned on, I felt such satisfaction, for in some way these lights preserved the memory of old friends while guaranteeing memories for many generations to come. It is wonderful to experience the generosity that exists in a community.
