An El Centro couple was arrested after reportedly using a pit bull to attack a relative.

Francisco Martinez Aguiar, 25, and his girlfriend, Maria Gonzalez, 30, were arrested after Gonzalez got into an altercation with Aguiar's sister Angelica Aguiar.

The victim's age was unavailable.

El Centro police Sgt. Jerrold Novak said the women got into an altercation about 1 a.m. Saturday. The two are neighbors in the 400 block of Vine Street in El Centro.

Gonzalez was having a party and the argument started when Angelica Aguiar was in Gonzalez's home.

When the two women started fighting, Gonzalez allegedly called for Francisco Aguiar's pit bull and he ordered the dog to attack his sister, according to police.

The dog attacked the victim and bit her at least once on the thigh.

While the pit bull was attacking the woman, Gonzalez allegedly beat her with her fists.

The victim took herself to El Centro Regional Medical Center where she was treated and released.

Aguiar was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and Gonzalez for conspiracy to commit assault with a deadly weapon and battery.

Aguiar's bail was set at $20,000 and Gonzalez's was set at $250. Both were being held in the county jail Saturday.

The dog was in police custody.
