Locals advance to section track finals

ESCONDIDO — Local track and field athletes qualified for the San Diego Section finals at the preliminary meet here this weekend.

From Brawley Union High, Raul Cobian qualified in the 800 meters with a 2 minute, 1.85 second finish. Richard Encinas qualified in the 110 high hurdles (14.8 seconds) and 300 hurdles (40.35). For the Wildcat girls Silvia Mendez qualified in the 1,600 (5:25.38) and the 3,200 (11:45.88). Marquita Travis made it in the 100 hurdles (15.82) and the triple jump (31 feet 1.75 inches) while Cynthia Flores qualified in the shot put (37-1.75) and discus (106-3).

Southwest High's Caroline Dessert qualified in the discus (101-5), Monica Gamboa made it in the 400 (1:03.04), Jennifer Black qualified in the 300 hurdles (50.65), Erica Holmes advanced in the long jump (15-4.75) and the team of Tatia Ernest, Erika Talley, Denisse Moreno and Gamboa qualified in the 4x400 relay (4:13.01). Southwest boys who qualified were Justin McCullough in the 400 (51.41), Terrence Johnson in the 100 (11.37) and Jose Luis Salazar in the triple jump (41-3.5).

Other locals to advance included Holtville's Michael Strong in the 800 (2:02.41) and Lindsay Cato in the high jump (4-10). Imperial's Gabriel Ibarra made it in the 110 hurdles (15.60) and Central's Jerrel Henderson qualified in the high jump (5-11) and Anthony Sabal made it in the long jump (21-11.75).

The San Diego Section track finals will begin Friday at Poway High School.
