Voice: Little hope for contract settlement in ECESD

May 22, 2001

I am a parent of children in the El Centro Elementary School District. My family helped the teachers in their demonstration at the last school board meeting. Sadly it became evident to me that there seems to be little hope for of a settlement of a teachers contract. It would seem that this matter is becoming more of a personal vendetta or struggle to show where the power lies.

Teachers, parents and children paraded peacefully and in good humor on the sidewalk in front of Sunflower School. In the parking lot a bus remained with driver alert, for the entire meeting, at our expense. Did the school board and superintendent really fear bodily harm, or was this merely theatrics for public consuption? During the meeting the behaviors of the board and superintendent deteriorated.

To me this is an insult not only to the teachers but to the many families that were there as well. Is this the kind of respect they have for teachers to whom they have entrusted our children? What kind of message are they trying to send us? What a sad and shameful state of affairs for El Centro.
