50 years ago — An El Centro pilot was rescued from a mountaintop 35 miles east of Yuma two hours after he bailed out of his plane after it had engine trouble. A Civil Air Patrol pilot made a daring landing on the mountainside and rescued the stranded pilot.

40 years ago — Westmorland Mayor James Harvey explained to the Brawley Kiwanis Club a plan to combine police and fire services. Harvey said the city would have a better balance of personnel with the consolidation.

30 years ago — Juveniles throwing rocks at a Holtville Junior High School bus broke four windows and caused superficial cuts to six of 10 students after a melee following a track meet Saturday at Calexico High School.

20 years ago — Petty Officer Mark Bowman of Calexico was named sailor of the year at the Naval Regional Medical Training Center, San Diego, as a result of his work as enlisted assistant to the administrative director of services. The letter requesting his nomination listed many of his achievements and said in part, "without prior experience in hospital administration, Petty Officer Bowman quickly grasped the myriad of duties."
