50 years ago — Informal explanatory talks were held by state conciliator Edward Peters of the California Department of Industrial Relations with various leading citizens of the community in an effort to avert a National Farm Labor Union strike in the Imperial Valley. A strike affecting 300 Valley farm labor workers was postponed for a day.

40 years ago — Calexico police shot and killed a rabid dog after the animal attacked four other dogs now under quarantine in the city pound. This was the first case of a rabid animal in Calexico since the end of the 1959 epidemic.

30 years ago — While Holtville Fire Chief Leslie Rubin attended the weekly fire drill Monday at the fire station, his garage caught fire. Two- thirds of the Rubin garage was destroyed along with the fire chief's boat and other store items.

20 years ago — U.S. Customs and Immigration officers early today intercepted an El Centro man with 40 pounds of marijuana at the Calexico Port of Entry.
