Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight in Hems Bros. Mortuary chapel in El Centro for former Imperial Valley resident Mearl C. Clapp, 83, of Escondido, who died Tuesday at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

A memorial service will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Hems chapel with the Rev. Walter Colace of Christ Community Church officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in El Centro.

Mr. Clapp was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Hickory, Okla. He married Alberta Whaley in 1945.

Mr. Clapp came to the Imperial Valley in the early 1940s. When World War II started he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Burma, where he met his wife. After the war he returned home with his wife.


He worked for many years in produce as a labor contractor, grower, packer and shipper. He also worked in agriculture for a fertilizer company and sold cars for Bert Pope's Lincoln/Mercury dealership.

Later in life he was the owner of Mearl's Place in Boulevard. For many years, Clapp was a member of the Western Growers Association. He was an active member of American Legion Post 25 in El Centro.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Young of El Centro and Anita Russell of Escondido; grandson, Steven Switzer of Milford, Pa.; granddaughters, Sherry Murphy of San Diego and Julie Combs of Claremont Mesa; great-grandchildren, Carissa, Shane, Sawyer and Steven Switzer Jr., all of Milford, Donal and Aaron Murphy, both of San Diego, and Justin Combs of Claremont Mesa; nieces, Connie Mayberry of Bakersfield, and Kelly Chandler of San Pedro; nephews, Von Clapp of Bakersfield and Gary Clapp of San Marcos.
