A 17-year-old El Centro teen was stabbed during a fight in a motel parking lot in the southeastern section of the city Sunday, police officials reported.

The youth was treated and released from El Centro Regional Medical Center. There was no information on where on his body he was wounded, according to El Centro police Sgt. Theresa Quinn, who did say his injuries were not serious.

The victim's name was not released because he is a juvenile.

Police arrested 21-year-old Jason Bowyer of El Centro in connection with the stabbing. He was booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

Information on his bail was unavailable Sunday.

The stabbing occurred in the parking lot of Motel 6 at 395 Smoketree Drive about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Both the victim and Bowyer were at a party at the motel when they became involved in an argument.

Quinn said she was unsure what caused the argument. However, at some point Bowyer allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim.

Police were called to the scene and arrested Bowyer in the parking lot of the motel. It was unclear Sunday if police retrieved the knife.

Quinn said Bowyer was taken into custody without further incident.

When asked why Bowyer was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and not attempted murder, Quinn said it was because the victim was not seriously hurt.
