50 years ago — America's veterans were honored by Memorial Day services in the Imperial Valley today. Special services were conducted in Evergreen Cemetery near El Centro and Riverview Cemetery in Brawley by veterans' organizations.

40 years ago — Sixty students will receive associate's degrees June 9 when Imperial Valley College has its commencement ceremony at 8 p.m. in the Ben Hulse cafetorium. The 1961 graduates will be presented by Milo P. Johnson, college president.

30 years ago — An El Centro educator and his family are going to Ethiopia on July 1 for a stint with the Peace Corps. Joseph H. Vogel, assistant principal at Wilson Junior High School, was named "vocational education curriculum specialist" with the Peace Corps. Vogel said the family will live in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia.

20 years ago — Fouls and free throws decided the 1981 San Diego CIF girls basketball championship Friday afternoon as Julian defeated Imperial 62-51 at the University of San Diego.
