Future still uncertain for Pioneers' management

May 30, 2001|By ANTHONY LONGORIA, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — The management future of the Pioneers Memorial Hospital District here remains unclear following a meeting of the district's Board of Directors Tuesday night.

Talk of having new Chief Executive Officer Richard Mendoza continue in his position surfaced before Tuesday's meeting and was expected to be discussed.

The board also was expected to discuss the hospital's future with Brim Healthcare Inc. and Brim possibly providing consultant services.

Board President Marcus Tapia said Tuesday night that "personnel issues" were discussed during closed session but he wouldn't reveal specifically what was discussed or what plans the district has for a search for a new CEO and chief financial officer.

Last month the board voted to end its contract with Brim and have the hospital manage itself.

Board members Daniel Paramo, Katy Santillan and Tapia voted to end the contract while Leo Haggarty and Aleta Shropshire voted to continue Brim's services.

Both Haggarty and Shropshire have sustained advocacy for a continued relationship with Brim.

With the termination of the Brim contract in July, the district will lose the services of Mendoza and longtime Chief Financial Officer Daniel Heckathorne, both Brim employees.

Brim has managed the hospital for 14 years.

Tapia speculated that discussion or action in open session regarding the district's CEO and CFO might take place at the board's next regular meeting.
