50 years ago — There were brilliant Hollywood stars and brilliant Kleig lights at the Fox Capitol Theater in Calexico as the movie "The Bullfighter and the Lady" was given an international premiere. "Bullfighter" stars Robert Stack and Gilbert Roland appeared onstage along with Calexico's Ruben Padilla, who played a featured part in the film.

40 years ago — Wildcatters reported they have struck oil south of Ocotillo. They say the deposit probably extends into Mexico and may include a gas field. Oil crews have been drilling around the Valley four years without material success. Two crews have been working around the clock for the past six weeks.

30 years ago — Returning vacationers, local residents and weekend travelers ran into delays at the Calexico Port of Entry reported as long as four hours. Although temperatures failed to reach last year's 101 high, comments concerning the long delays reached the boiling point.

20 years ago — Two men were killed when their light plane hit a transmission line and exploded Sunday four miles south of Holtville, causing power outages of up to almost an hour in portions of Imperial and Coachella valleys. Sheriff's officials said the men were killed when their Piper Super Cub hit a 160,000-volt transmission line at 4:44 p.m. near Hunt and Townland roads.
