Desert to explode tonight

June 01, 2001|By TIM YANNI, Sports Writer

The El Centro Police Athletic League held a fight promotion at La Fonda restaurant in El Centro Thursday to prepare boxers and fans for tonight's Explosion in the Desert matches that will be in PAL's Ryerson Youth Center in El Centro.

Adan "Explosion" Casillas was at the promotion, preparing to take on Pedro Garcia in the night's main event.

Through a translator, Casillas said he is ready for his bout with Garcia, who is replacing Jorge "Cocas" Ramirez, the fighter scheduled to compete.

"I feel very strong and I've been training very well," Casillas said. "I think I'm ready for anyone."

He said he is confident about the fight and a knockout victory is not out of the question.

Special guest and boxer Jorge "Maromero" Paez was in a rather playful mood at the pre-fight dinner.

Paez, who will fight in the Valley on July 28, said he has a possible title shot coming soon in Las Vegas. He already has won two world championships in his weight class.

Paez said he is looking forward to his opportunity to fight in his own neck of the woods. He said he is not too picky about who his opponent will be and he jokingly said his good looks make other fighters want to compete against him.

He said tonight's fights are notable because they feature Mexican fighters, and he said Mexican fighters are notorious for fighting hard until the final bell sounds.

Fight promoter Frank Carrillo said he is looking forward to the bouts.

"I know that we're going to have a very good fight crowd," Carrillo said. "Every fight is well-matched and I know that the fans are going to have a good time."

He said PAL wants to hold the event once again in July, when Paez will fight.

He added there are still plenty of good seats available for tonight's fights and the fact that Ryerson is a small venue makes every seat a good one.

The gates open at 6 p.m. and the first bout will start about 7:30 p.m.
