Holtville officer arrested in Brawley

June 02, 2001|By KELLY GRANT, Staff Writer

BRAWLEY — A Holtville police officer was arrested here Friday night on suspicion of drunk driving and vandalism after the truck he was driving struck a car.

Michael Kalin, 32, of Brawley was found with less than 1 ounce of marijuana in his pants pocket and an open bottle of beer was found in the truck, Brawley police Sgt. John Myers alleged.

Myers said Kalin was driving south on First Street when he turned right onto E Street.

Kalin reportedly turned too wide and struck a car, Myers said.

When Kalin was placed in the back of a police car after the incident, Myers said he was apparently "not happy" about it and kicked out one of the car's windows.

Kalin was booked into county jail just before midnight and was released on his own recognizance Saturday shortly before 1 p.m. Bail information was not available.

Myers said Kalin was not booked for allegedly being in possession of marijuana because the amount found was considered an infraction but not a misdemeanor.

However, Myers said police are considering seeking charges of resisting a peace officer and for possession of marijuana.

There were no passengers in Kalin's car and no injuries were reported in the accident.
