Transient accused of assault in Brawley

June 02, 2001

BRAWLEY — A local transient was arrested here Friday afternoon after allegedly hitting a woman with a broom and trying to attack her and another woman with a shopping cart.

Patricia Navarro, 57, a resident of Ciudad Plaza, was walking through the complex's lobby when she was allegedly punched in the stomach with a broom by James Scott Bass, 61, said Brawley Police Sgt. John Myers.

As Navarro was bent over, Bass allegedly tried to strike her with a shopping cart, Myers said.

When the complex's co-manager Maria Zavala, 34, tried to intervene, Bass allegedly aimed the cart at her, too, Myers said.

Bass, a former Ciudad Plaza resident, was booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Bail was set at $20,000.

Myers said there was no apparent motivation for the attack.
