Four hurt when car lands in Niland-area canal

NILAND — Four individuals received minor to moderate injuries after their vehicle ended up on its roof in a canal about five miles north of here.

A press release from the California Highway Patrol states at 5:40 p.m. Saturday a four-door sedan was carrying five individuals including the driver and a 2-year-old boy.

The car was traveling north at a speed of around 65 mph on Davis Road when the driver lost control and the car overturned into the canal.

The driver, whose identity was unavailable, fled the scene.

The adult passengers, Victor Rodriguez, 33, Ruben Martinez, 22, Reyna Reyes Martinez, 22, and Allen Martinez, 21, received minor injures, for which they were treated at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley and released. All are from Mexico.


The 2-year-old boy suffered a possible fracture to his left arm. He was taken to Pioneers.

None of the passengers was wearing a seat belt.
