Brawley Thrift Store falls victim to fire

BRAWLEY — Fire destroyed a thrift store here Sunday despite efforts of firefighters from throughout the Imperial Valley who battled the flames for two hours.

The fire erupted sometime before 6:40 p.m. at the Brawley Thrift Store at Ninth and G streets. The store was operated by Overcomers in Christ Ministries.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 6:42 p.m. and the fire was determined to be a second-alarm blaze, which meant fire departments from around the Valley were called to the scene.

Brawley fire Capt. Manuel Sevilla said some 30 firefighters from Brawley, El Centro, the county, Calipatria and Calipatria State Prison fought the blaze.

Sevilla said it took about two hours to control the blaze, adding firefighters remained on scene until after 10 p.m.

No one was injured in the fire, but the thrift store was destroyed, he said.

"We mostly fought it from the outside," Sevilla said, adding the age of the building and the type of roof made it too dangerous to attack the blaze from inside the business.

Sevilla said firefighters planned to return to the scene today to try to determine a cause of the fire.

He said evidence indicates the blaze started in the rear of the building.
