50 years ago — Ellis Dunn and Edith Allen were selected as recipients of the American Legion Award at Central Junior College's commencement exercise June 1. Eugene Waterman, dean of the college, presented the class to board member George Kirk.

40 years ago — Fire and police officials were busy checking out the June 4 fire that burned two haystacks and damaged a boxcar near El Centro. Fire Marshal Russell Sherwood said the blazes looked like the work of juveniles.

30 years ago — Surely the proudest parents at Imperial High School graduation will be Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Eager. Their son, Darryl, 17, will be the class valedictorian. Darryl, who earned a sizzling 3.9 GPA, likes to ride on the back of a friend's Honda and shoot baskets in the back yard. And he is blind.

20 years ago — Imperial Valley College has received a $203,000 federal grant for its external college. IVC won the grant after it ranked second in a national competition with more than 600 other institutions for funding by the U.S. Department of Education Division of Institution Development. This is the eighth consecutive year IVC has won a title III grant, according to an external college spokesman.
