Baseball all-stars to face off Saturday

On the heels of the Imperial Valley Football Coaches Association's senior football all-star game, the Imperial Valley Baseball Coaches Association will present the inaugural East/West senior baseball game at 7 p.m. Saturday at Imperial High School.

Representing the East squad will be players from Calexico, Central Union, Holtville and Vincent Memorial high schools. They will be taking on a West team made up of players from Brawley Union, Calipatria, Imperial and Southwest high schools.

The contest will be a nine-inning affair instead of the normal seven innings played in high school, allowing more players to showcase their talents.

Coaching the East team will be Sergio Rubio, who coached Calexico to an Imperial Valley League championship, going 11-1 in league and 17-9 overall.


Rubio's counterpart will be Brawley coach Pedro Carranza, who led the Wildcats to second place in the IVL with a 10-2 mark and a 14-10 overall record.

Leading the West will be five players from Southwest High: Eric Flores, who finished the season with a .466 batting average and 13 RBIs, George Rapp, who finished second in the Imperial Valley in home runs with four and won four games as a starting pitcher with a 3.37 ERA, Frank Richards, who had 13 RBIs, David Herrera, who had 15 RBIs and David Cordova, who recorded 13 RBIs and a home run.

Also representing the West will be Brawley's Sergio Romo, who finished with five wins, a 3.38 ERA and 51 strikeouts, Calvin Williams, who finished second among Valley seniors with 21 RBIs, and Adam Whittle, who finished with a .363 average.

On the West squad from Imperial will be Stewart Harvey, who recorded eight RBIs and two stolen bases; Brett Cochran, who finished the year with two home runs, seven stolen bases, five wins as a pitcher, a 2.46 ERA and 68 strikeouts; and teammate Chris Mazeroll, who tied for first among seniors in RBIs with 22. Rounding out the squad is Calipatria's Eriberto Perez.

Heading the charge for the East is a group of six Calexico Bulldogs, led by Diego Lopez, who finished with a .352 average, two home runs, 22 RBIs, three stolen bases, a 2.49 ERA and 76 strikeouts. Also from Calexico are Juan Lopez, with a 1.70 ERA and 58 strikeouts, Pedro Cazares with 16 RBIs, Chris Wong with 13 RBIs and five stolen bases, Matt Sauceda, who recorded eight RBIs and six stolen bases, and Hector Rivera, who had a .456 batting average.

From Central will be Danny Vasquez, who finished with six RBIs and a steal, Matt Baker with 10 RBIs and five stolen bases, and Jose Ibarra, who had with 13 RBIs and led his team with five wins.

Representing Holtville will be Alex Navarro, who finished with a .324 average, 13 RBIs and seven stolen bases, and Luis Avila, who had five RBIs, five steals and 29 strikeouts as a pitcher.

Rounding out the East is Adrian Araguas, who led Vincent with a .382 average, 13 RBIs and five stolen bases.
