50 years ago — Because of inclement weather, the Santa Barbara Chamber of Commerce goodwill flight to the Imperial Valley has been canceled. The Santa Barbara group hoped the weather would clear in the coastal city.

40 years ago — Sixty graduates received degrees last night at Imperial Valley College's first graduation exercise as a countywide institution. IVC board Chairman Bill Anderson of Calexico presented diplomas to the 1961 class.

30 years ago — Mike Sudduth, 18, Holtville High School's athlete of the year for 1970-71, was drafted Wednesday by the Los Angeles Dodgers as baseball's free agent player draft concluded in New York.

20 years ago — Like the cavalry to the rescue, the federal government will pay Imperial County $800,000 in-lieu taxes, enough to almost balance the proposed $53.8 million county budget, according to County Administrative Officer John McClure.
