CALEXICO — Skateboarders and sporting children of all types will be happy to know this city's Redevelopment Agency could allocate $500,000 to finish construction of Nosotros Park.

The RDA board will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in City Hall.

At previous meetings, every RDA board member supported the under-construction Nosotros Park project and voted unanimously to spend agency funds this month if state money wasn't available.

It wasn't, city officials were informed.

The Imperial Valley's state assemblyman, David Kelley, informed the city that state general fund money won't be available because of the energy crisis but did say the city could apply for state money from parks and recreation bonds, according to Kelley assistant Bob Ham.

When he was in the state Senate three years ago, Kelley secured $750,000 to begin construction of the park near the international border on the west side of town.

Instead of applying for competitive funds and waiting for some more state money, the RDA board during a May meeting decided to spend $500,000 in agency funds to speed completion of the park.

City Manager Richard Inman said the agency needed to move quickly because the half-completed park had become a target for vandalism.

Juan Verdugo, director of the community development department, said once the money is paid to the construction company, the park could be finished by the end of summer in a best-case scenario.

When completed, the park will feature a skate park, recently designed with the assistance of local youths, a running track circling the park, basketball courts, picnic areas, a young children's play area and a soccer field next to a Little League baseball field.

In other business before the board, members will hear a plea from trustees of the Heffernan Memorial Hospital District to forgive some or all of their $450,000 in debt remaining from a 1997 loan.

The board also will decide whether to enter into a joint-use agreement with the Calexico Unified School District to build a new gymnasium.
