El Centro police arrested a woman Saturday on suspicion of child endangerment after she allegedly was found to be under the influence of a drug while holding her 3-week-old baby.

Corina Cano Sanchez, 33, of Heber was booked into county jail where she remained this morning with her bail set at $35,000.

Sanchez was taken into custody at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Bucklin Park in El Centro after police were called to a report of a subject possibly under the influence and with a child.

El Centro police Sgt. Jerrold Novak said when officers arrived at the park they found Sanchez holding her baby.

Novak said Sanchez had gone to the park to meet with her husband to discuss some family issues.

Novak alleged officers thought Sanchez appeared to be under the influence and was holding her baby in such a way that she was not supporting the baby's head.

Sanchez was taken into custody for a parole violation as well as suspicion of child endangerment and being under the influence.

The baby was turned over to the father.

In a separate case, police arrested Gloria Maria Arreola, 35, Sunday on suspicion of willful cruelty to a child after she allegedly threw an object at her 15-year-old son, striking him in the back of the head.

Arreola, who lives in the 200 block of Barrett Avenue, was taken into custody about 3 p.m. and booked into county jail. Her bail was set at $35,000.

Novak said the son did require medical attention but he was unsure if the boy was taken to the hospital.

Novak said Arreola threw the object when two of her children were arguing.
