Wildcats win own lifting meet

BRAWLEY — The Brawley Union High School football team hosted its inaugural power-lifting meet here Saturday and took the championship.

Imperial High took second followed by Central Union. Also competing were Calexico, Holtville and Southwest high schools.

Earning outstanding lifter honors were Brawley's Matt Sevilla (lightweight division), Steve Duran of Brawley (middleweight), Imperial's D.J. Hastings (heavyweight) and Brawley's Matt Castañeda (super heavyweight).

The nearly 200 lifters were divided into 16 weight classes. Each lifter competed in the bench press, squat and dead lift, with total weight lifted determining the winners.

Winning for Brawley were Daniel Solorio in the 120-29 pound division, Joel Aguirre (130-39), Sevilla (140-49), Bobby Myers (150-59) and Duran in the 160-69 pound division.


Also winning gold medals for the Wildcats were Dominic Aguirre (170-79), Curtis Smith (180-89), Brandon Wellcome (190-99), Arturo Ayon (200-09) and Carlos Garcia (210-19). Rounding out Brawley's winners were Daniel Benevides (240-49), Jacob Carrillo (250-59) and Castañeda (260-plus).

Finishing as runners-up for the Wildcats were Wesley Sharp (140-49), Grant Elmore (160-69), Adrian Vandiver (170-79), Jonathan Garcia (180-89), Eric Drew (200-09), David Godinez (220-29) and Russell Abubo (260-plus).

Winning for Imperial was Hastings in the 220-29 pound division. Placing second for Imperial were Dominic Rodriguez (0-119), Sam Selay (120-29) and Jason Gundy (230-39).

Winning for Central was Adrian Arrela (0-119), with teammates Oscar Garcia (210-19) and Manuel Escobar (250-59) finishing second.

Leading Calexico was Saul Tamayo winning the 230-39 pound division, with teammates Eric Avila (150-59) and Manuel Garcia (190-99) placing second.

Holtville's Israel Avila took second in the 240-49 pound division.
