June 16, 2001

OCOTILLO — A 77-year-old San Ysidro man died around 3 p.m. Friday after his sedan strayed off a stretch of Highway 98 near here and smacked into a boulder.

The identity of the victim was not available Saturday. A California Highway Patrol press release states the man's car hit the boulder as he was attempting to merge onto westbound Interstate 8.

After hitting the boulder, the car flipped and skidded into the path of oncoming interstate traffic but no more accidents occurred.

The accident backed up traffic in the westbound lanes of the interstate. The Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
