Local students awarded $8,800 in ag scholarships

The Imperial Valley Vegetable Growers Association in El Centro recently awarded $8,800 in scholarships to 11 Imperial Valley students.

The purpose of the scholarships, according to an IVVGA press release, is to assist students who wish to continue their studies in agricultural-related majors and are only awarded to Imperial Valley students attending four-year colleges who maintain grade-point averages of 2.5 or higher.

The following Imperial Valley Produce Scholarship recipients each received awards: Leigh Ann Love, Scott Emanuelli, Steven Emanuelli, Christen Johnson, Molly Perez, Danilu Ramirez, Yvette Ihidoy, Emily Irungaray, Kurt Rubin, Adam Holtz and Jared Britschgi.

The funds for the scholarships are raised by Los Vigilantes in cooperation with the produce industry and other Imperial Valley businesses. More than $140,000 has been given in scholarships since the scholarship's inception.

In addition, the recipients each received a $100 Danny Danenberg Scholarship, totaling $1,100. This scholarship is a memorial fund in honor of Danny Danenberg, a legend in the vegetable growing business and a mentor to the Imperial Valley ag community, a press release from IVVGA states.
