June 21, 2001|By MARIO RENTERÍA, Staff Writer

BOMBAY BEACH — Two residents here engaged in a fist fight that landed one in the hospital and the other in jail.

Imperial County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pompeyo Tabarez said the two got into a brawl about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday when one declined to give the other a ride.

Tabarez said witnesses told officers Dennis Michael Burkett, 29, was driving with his wife on his way home when he was flagged down by Patrick Lamasters, 39, who asked him for a ride. Burkett declined.

Moments later, Lemasters went to Burkett's home to confront him. The confrontation turned physical and they engaged in a fist fight that resulted in Lemasters being taken to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. Information on his condition was unavailable today.

Tabarez said Burkett will be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, specifically his fists, and possibly other charges as the investigation continues.

Lamasters will not be charged, said Tabarez.
