Brawley wrestlers dominate summer meet

BRAWLEY — Brawley Union High School kicked off its summer wrestling league here Thursday by dominating the competition.

Competing in the event along with Brawley were wrestlers from Calexico, Imperial, Palo Verde and Yuma high schools Cibola High, Kofa and Yuma.

The wrestling league will run for four weeks, with the first three weeks being round-robin matches in each weight class. A tournament will be staged the fourth week.

Each wrestler competed in two matches and Brawley led the field with 12 wrestlers going 2-0.

Going 2-0 for the Wildcats were Michael Soza at 112 pounds, David Villagran at 125, Joel Aguirre and Michael Cajigas, both at 130 pounds, Cesar Mendez and Anthony Arevalo, both at 135, Anthony Cardenas at 145, Ruben Perez, Jaime Antunez, Alex Salgado and Robert Anaya, all at 189 pounds, and Brandon Kellum at 215.

Imperial's James Smith was 2-0 at 103 pounds.

Cibola had four wrestlers go 2-0 and Kofa and Yuma both had one.

The wrestlers will compete again at 6 p.m. Thursday.
