50 years ago — Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co, installers, linemen, repairmen and central office maintenance workers went on strike. Imperial Valley members of the CIO Communications Workers of America joined union members in seven Southern California counties in a walkout.

40 years ago — El Centro police arrested a 35-year-old man on an assault with a deadly weapon charge after he smashed another man over the head with a board. The incident occurred after the man poked his finger into the suspect's cheeseburger.

30 years ago — To meet a July 1 deadline, trustees of Central Union High School and El Centro school districts approved tentative budgets "with no fat." At the same time representatives of the two districts' teacher groups pointed out the instructor salary schedule amounts to a pay cut.

20 years ago — A Winterhaven couple has been released from county jail without charges following their arrest Tuesday on suspicion of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman. But Sheriff's Office chief investigator Lt. Richard Wilson said the release of the couple Thursday doesn't mean the case is officially closed.
