Semi plunges off I-8, Anaheim man killed

June 27, 2001

OCOTILLO — A 49-year-old Anaheim man died Tuesday after his tractor-trailer rig plunged 100 feet off Interstate 8 about three miles west of this community.

Nam Van Phan, the driver and reportedly the only person in the rig, died at the scene, according to county Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes.

Phan was driving down the mountain grade after 6 p.m. when he lost control of the rig. Information was not available on what caused him to lose control.

The rig, which was hauling avocados, struck the guard rail and went over the edge of the interstate down into the Coyote Wash area.

Hayes said the cabin disintegrated upon impact and Phan was ejected.
