WESTMORLAND — The Westmorland Union Elementary School District board unanimously voted to hire Imperial County Office of Education Assistant Superintendent Jim Matherly as the district's new superintendent.

Board members during a special meeting Wednesday voted to hire Matherly on a one-year basis, said district Interim Superintendent Linda Morse.

Matherly's contract will be effective July 2.

"I'm sure he'll bring a lot of experience," said Morse. "He has been superintendent of several small school districts throughout Imperial County and also because he is continuing to be linked with the ICOE, he's going to strengthen the partnership with our district.

"I'm looking forward to working with him," she said.

Morse became interim superintendent after Ann Mallory resigned early this year.

Matherly was not available for comment this morning.
