Voice: Qualified people needed to run for IVC board

June 29, 2001

This November, three seats on the Imperial Valley College's Board of Trustees are open to be filled by the voters. The three persons will be elected to represent the El Centro, Holtville and San Pasqual school districts. The filing period will begin in mid-July.

Claudine Duff, representing the Central Union High School District, has served the college well for many years. Many faculty and staff are saddened by her retirement. We hope that some other fair-minded and informed El Centro resident will be willing to step forward and seek her open seat on the Board of Trustees.

To serve as a trustee of the college, you need be at least 18 years of age, a legal resident of one of the high school districts mentioned above and hold no personal or financial relationships that would create a conflict of interest for you.

Ideally, I think you will agree, a college trustee should be educated and well-informed, fair-minded and should possess a willingness to hear all sides of the issue before reaching a balanced, final decision. Perhaps more now than ever before, IVC needs trustees willing and able to serve as transformational leaders, helping the college make the changes so desperately needed.

I currently serve IVC as an instructor and as the local chapter president for the California Teachers Association. For the last two years I served as editor for the college's accreditation self-study.

Imperial Valley College will continue to see challenges in the coming years; we need effective leaders to help us meet those challenges.
