A Border Patrol agent on her way to work Saturday afternoon suffered minor injuries in a traffic collision at the intersection of Bowker and Abatti roads southeast of El Centro.

The agent, of El Centro, whose name was not available Saturday from the California Highway Patrol, was traveling south on Bowker behind a tractor-trailer rig driven by owner/operator Presciliano Levaro, 40, of El Centro, according to the Highway Patrol.

As Levaro attempted to turn right onto Abatti Road, the agent's vehicle, a compact car, struck the big rig on the right side of its diesel tank.

The crash ruptured the diesel fuel tank, causing an estimated 40 gallons of the diesel fuel to spill.

Levaro was not injured, but the agent sustained lacerations to her right hand, elbow and upper lip.

She was transported to the El Centro Regional Medical Center, but a hospital spokesman said Saturday evening no information was available on her status.

Highway Patrol Sgt. Mike Berger said the Imperial County Public Works Department was called in to handle the diesel spill.

Berger said about 10 feet of Bowker Road has been barricaded until the fuel spill has been cleaned. He said the county expects to clean up the spill Monday.
