Death of Yuma man, 69, investigated as possible homicide

July 03, 2001|By DARREN SIMON, Staff Writer

WINTERHAVEN — County Sheriff's Office investigators here are investigating the death of a 69-year-old man as a possible homicide after he was found shot to death in his car.

The body of Robert Crowe of Yuma was found in his car, stopped on Winterhaven Drive and Araz Road.

County Coroner Investigator Gary Hayes said Crowe died from a single gunshot wound to the head.

He said the case is being investigated as a homicide, as is policy. However, he said it is "premature" to say whether it was a homicide or whether Crowe took his own life.

The gun used has not been recovered.

Hayes said it is suspicious the gun was not found at the scene.

"That is our hanging point," he said.

Crowe's body was found by a tow truck driver at 5:15 p.m. The driver contacted authorities.

Hayes said the body was found in the driver's seat and the driver's side window was open.
